BOOK BY: Carolyn Miller
What a refreshing story!
Can I just say, I loved the premise of this entire series – stories about the average person in regency times? Each story has delivered, and given readers so much more. These stories are about people with real issues whose disabilities or outward appearances would make them “less than ideal” as heroes or heroines. But everyone deserves a happily-ever-after, and author Carolyn Miller delivers this in spades in her Regency Wallflowers series.
Book three, Dawn’s Untrodden Green presents readers with a decorated hero from the Peninsular War, who, according to a pretentious neighbour ‘must be handsome – all heroes are’. Daniel has learned that his niece is now orphaned and comes to collect her, desiring to leave the pomp of celebrations behind him. Daniel Balfour is not what the neighbours expect, much to his delight, and it sets him on a rocky path of keeping his real identity secret.
Theodosia is used to whispered remarks about the birth mark that mars her face. But despite the cruelty of gossip, she has a kind heart, doting on her friend’s orphaned daughter. Her tongue is quick and her wit is smart – something she’s learned from her general grandfather.
There’s so much to love about this story.
The setting of Northumberland is vividly described, making it easy for readers to picture Theo’s home. A colourful cast of characters to love and to wish didn’t have space on the page make Theo and Daniel’s story all that much more intriguing.
Stereotypes are challenged in this novel, which is refreshing.
The banter from the moment Theo and Daniel meet is delightful, and carries on throughout the entire novel. And – oh my! – I guarantee you, you haven’t read a proposal like Daniel’s.
This book had me smiling and turning pages until the wee hours of the morning.
Now that I’ve read book three, I have a sudden urge to re-read the whole series…
